Chapter 21
Odyssey Space Research Station
Krona
Tennaâs shoulders relax as she leads me into Oliviaâs room, and as soon as I cross the threshold, I see why. The place seems to live and breathe.
Warm light caresses the tapestries on the walls, and the tomes on the shelves fill the air with a rich, earthy scent. It tugs at my shoulders, trying to bring them down from my ears, but I still eye the little Human woman cautiously.
I hope Tennaâs right about her.
If Ricardo is to be believed, we have to get Olivia to help us. Nothing else will work, according to his explanations of this strange place. If she refuses, she could turn us in, and then what would become of us, of our Tribe?
My stomach clenches.
But Ricardo brought me to Tenna. He stuck his neck out in doing so. And Tennaâs never given me reason not to trust her instincts before.
She trusts this Human woman.
That has to be enough.
Memories of false memories, the impressions of a story told in bits and pieces, flash through my mind. The idea of her with Mourgam. The thought of her beneath him.
I ignore it all, thankful that the actual images, the implanted memories, have been erased with some concoction of chemicals.
Staring at Tenna, Ricardo, and Olivia, I consider simply turning the Belt off, revealing my presence. But these Humans seem frail, and I wonder briefly if they could actually be scared to death.
But Ricardo spares me the decision. He reaches out to shake Tennaâs hand, amber eyes sparkling in the soft light. I marvel at the strange custom, watching Tenna take care not to crush brittle Human bones in her grasp, and a smile tugs at my lips.
âHas Krona found you?â Ricardo asks, getting right to the point.
Tenna replies, nodding, âHeâs with me.â
Oliviaâs brows furrow, and I donât keep her waiting. I switch the Belt off, and Tenna watches me reappear. My heart gallops as her eyes trace over my form, eyes softening, then smoldering. A smile like coming home perches on her lips, but a haze of uncertainty clouds her gaze.
My heart twists.
Should I have just told her?
I want so badly for her to know me, to reach for me as she has so many times before.
But would she think I was forcing her hand?
Would she think I was taking advantage of her lack of memory?
She doesnât know me, doesnât know our Tribe or how much we value integrity.
Her mossy eyes hold nothing but questions, and my chest tightens. I tear my eyes away, placing the Belt on Oliviaâs chair. I say nothing as the Human woman stares at me, then raises a glass to her lips with raised brows. She eyes the Belt, tipping her head to the side as her eyes narrow.
Ricardo glances at me, then turns to Tenna. âWhat did he tell you?â
I breathe a sigh of relief, grateful that he honored his promise to let me tell her.
âHe told me what we really are and whatâs being done to our Tribe,â she answers.
